Canadian Fencer Julie Leprohon finishes 15th at World Cup

LONDON, ENGLAND – Julie Leprohon of Montreal, Que., finished 15th at the Ipswich Cup losing to Marijana Markovic of Germany 15-12.

 

On her road to the top 16, Leprohon easily defeated Amber Parkinson of Australia and Claudia Panuschka of Austria.

 

In her best competition of the season so far, Leprohon was satisfied with her performance.  “I was happy with the way I fenced, I was able to use a wide variety of moves and I got the job done.”

 

Magdalena Kumiet of Poland won her second World Cup of the year defeating Keum-Nam Lee of Korea 15-14 in overtime.  The bronze medallist were Li Na of China and Julija Vansovica of Latvia.

 

Sherraine MacKay, ranked third in the world from Brooks, Alta., suffered a second round loss to Hee-Jeong Kim of Korea 15-14 finishing 17th.

 

The Other Canadian results were Monique Kavelaars (Appin, Ont.) placing 35th, Catherine Dunnette (Calgary, Alta.) 43rd and Marie-Eve Pelletier (Quebec, Que.) finishing 59th.

 

The last qualification competition by team for the Athens Olympics is this Friday, February 20th in Tauberbischofsheim, Germany.
