September 25 (Belfast) - After a 12 year absence, Canada marked
its return to the 2006 Comonwealth Fencing Championships by
dominating the competition. Team Canada concluded their
domination by winning the Men’s Team Foil event and the
Wilkinson Trophy (awarded to the nation with the best overall
results
Although Canada sent
a relatively small team (www.fencing.ca/2006_commonwealth_team.htm)
of only 15 fencers, it still managed to win the overall title
despite not fielding a full team of 30. “We may have lacked
quantity but the quality was definitey there”, commented Danek
Nowosielski, CFF HP Director.
Over the course of the championships, Canadian fencers won 8
gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals, establishing a new record
for gold medals by a single nation at the same championships.
The previous record of seven was held by Canada (1990) and
England (1978, 1998).
Notable performances include 3 double gold medalists (individual
and team): Monica Kwan (Victoria), Tomy Linteau (Quebec) and
Josh McGuire (Montreal) and three double podiums finishes. 1st
and 2nd in Men’s Epee and Women’s Foil: 1st and 3rd in Men’s
Foil and 2nd and 3rd in Men’s Sabre.
Although fencing is currently not part of the Commonwealth
Games, official Commonwealth Games medals are awarded at the
Commonwealth Fencing Championships, since they are held the same
year as the Games. The Commonwealth Fencing Federation is
working to have Fencing included in the Commonwealth Games in
the future.
