2005 CFF Athletes of the Year

The Canadian Fencing Federation (CFF) is pleased to announce the recipients of its athlete of the year awards for 2005.

                                      Female - Sherraine MacKay (Women's Epee)
  Male - Igor Tikhomirov (Men's Epee)
  Jr. Female -  Julie Cloutier (Women's Sabre)
  Jr. Male - Nicolas Teisseire (Men's Foil)
  Team - Women's Epee

 

Sherraine MacKay's (Brooks, AB) bronze medal
performance at the 2005 World Championships was
the first time that a Canadian has won a medal at the
Senior World Championships. During the 2005 season
she also won 3 bronze medals in world cup action
(Vancouver, Barcelona and Nankin) and finished the
2005 season ranked 5th in the World in Women's Epee.
She completed her bronze season by placing 3rd at
the 2005 Masters held in Paris in November.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Igor Tikhomirov (Richmond Hill, ON), placed in the top 8
at three World Cups in 2005 (Vancouver, Carolina and Bogota)
and finished 21st at the 2005 World Championships. He
completed the 2005 season ranked 17th in the world in Men's Epee.
 

 

 

 

 


Julie Cloutier (Repentigny, QC) is the first Canadian to win a senior World Cup medal in Women's Sabre, earning a bronze in June in Havana. Her 6th place at the 2005 Junior World Championships is also a best-ever Canadian performance. She also won a silver medal in Junior World Cup action this year. In 2005, she was ranked 32nd in the world in Women's Sabre among seniors and 9th in the world among juniors.

 

 

 

 

 

Nicolas Teisseire (Boucherville, QC) was the only male fencer to place in the top 16 at the 2005 Junior World Championships. During the 2005 junior campaign, he won a silver medal and added another top 8 result in junior world cup action. He completed the 2005 junior season ranked 17th in the World in Men's Foil.

 


 


In 2005, the Women's Epee Team, made up (from left to right) of
Catherine Dunnette, Monique Kavelaars, Leslie Palmai (coach),
Julie Leprohon and Sherraine MacKay
won Canada's first ever medal
(a bronze in Havana) in Team World Cup action. They also placed 6th
at the 2005 World Championships, improving on the previous best-ever
result (11th in 2001) in Women's Team Epee. The Women's Epee  Team
finished the 2005 season ranked 6th in the world.

The CFF would like to thank Leon Paul Fencing Equipment, who will be sponsoring the Athletes of the Year awards until 2008. Leon Paul will provide a pair of Leon Paul/Hi-Tec Blades fencing shoes to each of the winners.
