Havana, Cuba - Sherraine Mackay of Brooks, Alta., finished
fifth on Saturday after falling 15-12 to Russian Anna Sivkova in
the quarter final at the World Cup Grand Prix in Havana Cuba.
Despite just
missing the medal rounds, MacKay, now ranked 7th in the world, has
to be pleased with the way she fenced earlier in the day defeating
Zuleidis Ortiz Fuentes of Cuba 15-9, Andreas Rentmeister of
Austria 15-11 followed by a spirited 15-13 victory over Imke
Duplitzer of Germany.
“It felt
better today, I had a few strong matches and it was nice to get a
measure of revenge against Imke Duplitzer. We’ve been going back
and forth for the past few years and our matches are always
entertaining!”
In an all
France finale, Maureen Nisima topped her follow teammate Laura
Flessel-Colovic 15-12 to win the gold medal while Anna Sivkova and
Li Na of China earned bronze.
MacKay was
not the only Canada women's epeeist to perform well in the
competition as Monique Kavelaars of Appin, Ont., placed sixteenth
after stunning Germany's Marijan Markovic 15-13 in the second
round. She then succumbed 15-10 to #1 in the world, Laura
Flessel-Colovic from France. This was Kavelaars best result of the
season thus far.
Other
notable Canadian results came from Madga Krol of Vancouver, BC.,
32nd, Julie Leprohon of Montreal, Que., 45th, Marie-Eve Pelletier
from Quebec City 49th, Joanna Guy of Toronto, Ont., 50th and
Calgary's Catherine Dunnette finishing 52nd.
In the
Havana World Cup women's epee team event today, Canada finished
7th out of the 13 countries present. The team of Sherraine Mackay,
Monique Kavelaars, Catherine Dunnette, Julie Leprohon and
Marie-Eve Pelletier won their first match against Greece 38-26
followed by losses to Hungry and Italy 45-28 and finished off the
day on a winning note outbesting Korea 35-27. This was the last
team event before the Olympics and Canada will go into Athens
ranked 6th over all.
France
defeated China in the final 38-36 to capture the gold while
Germany beat Hungary 45-31 to win the bronze.
The last
Individual World Cup on the season is next weekend in Carolina,
Puerto Rico.
