February 8, 2010 - The
Canadian Fencing Federation would like to congratulate Hugues Boisvert-Simard
for his remarkable performance by winning the silver medal at the World Cup in "Cidade
de Lisboa" in Lisbon Portugal this weekend. This silver medal at a World cup
brought him up in the world rankings to the 12th best in the world. -

January 19, 2010 - Canada won
one silver and three bronze medals at the North American Circuit in San José on
the weekend. This competition gathered over 1000 of the best fencers from North
America and marked the last competition of importance before the selection for
the junior and cadet world championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, which are
scheduled in April of this year.

2009 World Championships - Sherraine Schalm wins silver medal |

Montreal, October 5, 2009 –
Sherraine Schalm of Ottawa earned Canada’s best ever
result at the world fencing championships on Monday winning the
silver medal in the women’s epee event at the competition held in
Antalya, Turkey. Schalm, whose previous best was third at the 2005
worlds, lost 9-8 in the final to Lubov Shutova of Russia. Anfisa Pochkalova of Ukraine and Sonja Tol of the Netherlands won the bronze medals. >>more |

Pierre Manville wins two Bronze Medals |
|
Pierre Mainville won two bronze medals, one in sabre and the second in epee, at the recent Wheelchair Fencing World Cup held in Montreal, May 1-2, during the Défi Sportif.
In sabre, Pierre met the Greek Emmanouil Bodgod in semi-finals, but lost 15-11. In epee, after an easy victory in quarter-finals against the American Ken Magaha (15-5), Pierre faced a difficult opponent: Alim Latrèche from France, the 2004 Paralympic Champion. Latrèche had the upper hand over the Quebecor and won 15-9.

Sherraine Schalms wins silver at the Florina Fencing World Cup |

16 March 2009, Florina (Greece) - Sherraine Schalm fenced her way to the
final at the Women's Epee Fencing World Cup, held March 14-15 in Florina,
Greece. She won the silver medal after losing to the Italian Cristiana
Cascioli by the mark 15-8. The other Canadian, Ainsley Switzer, finished
in 12th position. She was defeated 15-14 by the Italian and future
bronze medalist, Giulia Rizzi. Congratulations to Sherraine for her

Canada can only send one fencer in MS to this competition since at least one athlete has qualified in each of the other weapons. |

(Valencia) - Canada won a record 10 medals at the 2006 Pan-Am
Zone Fencing Championships in Valencia, Venzuela. The previous
high at a Pan-Am Championship or Games was five (87, 91 and 99).
Canadian fencers doubled that mark, winning 4 gold, 2 silver and
4 bronze medals. It also marked the first time that Canada won
more than one gold medal at the same Pan-Am Championships or

Ottawa
- Michel Dessureault of Gatineau will be inducted into the
Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony Oct. 24 at the Canadian War
Museum. Dessureault was a 20-year member of the Canadian fencing team,
in epee and foil. He won a full set of medals over three Commonwealth
Games and two at the Pan Ams. He competed in three Olympics (1976-84-88)
and had Canada's best Olympic result in men's epee, placing 10th in
1984.
Saskatoon - Allan Francis will be inducted into the Saskatoon Sports
Hall of Fame on November 4. Allan was a junior national team member in
1991, a senior team member in 1992, 1993 and 1994 and twice represented
Canada at the Pan-American Games. In 1992 he won gold at an Olympic
qualifying tournament in Argentina and was selected for the Men's Epee
team for the 1992 Olympic Games. |
